Organophosphate triesters (tri-OPEs) threaten human health through dietary exposure, but little is known about their feed-to-food transfer and in vivo behavior in farm animals. Herein 135 laying hens were fed with contaminated feed (control group, low-level group and high-level group) to elucidate the bioaccumulation, distribution, and metabolism of the six most commonly reported tri-OPEs. The storage (breast muscle), metabolism and mobilization (liver and blood) and non-invasive (feather) tissues were collected. The exposure-increase (D1∼14) and depuration-decrease (D15∼42) trends indicated that feed exposure caused tri-OPE accumulation in animal tissues. Tissue-specific and moiety-specific behavior was observed for tri-OPEs. The highest transfer factor (TF) and transfer rate (TR) were observed in liver (TF: 14.8%∼82.3%; TR: 4.40%∼24.5%), followed by feather, breast muscle, and blood. Tris(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) had the longest half-life in feather (72.2 days), while triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) showed the shortest half-life in liver (0.41 days). Tri-OPEs' major metabolites (organophosphate diesters, di-OPEs) were simultaneously studied, which exhibited dose-dependent and time-dependent variations following administration. In breast muscle, the inclusion of di-OPEs resulted in TF increases of 735%, 1108%, 798%, and 286% than considering TCIPP, tributyl phosphate, tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate and tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate alone. Feather was more of a proxy of birds' long-term exposure to tri-OPEs, while short-term exposure was better reflected by di-OPEs. Both experimental and in silico modeling methods validated aryl-functional group facilitated the initial accumulation and metabolism of TPhP in the avian liver compared to other moiety-substituted tri-OPEs.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Combined somatosensory- and motor-evoked potential (SSEP and MEP) changes for predicting prognosis in thoracic spinal surgery have been variably reported. PURPOSE: We aimed to explore the validity of combined SSEP and MEP for predicting postoperative motor deficits (PMDs) in thoracic spinal decompression surgery (TSDS) and identify a relatively optimal neurophysiological predictor of PMDs in patients based on preoperative motor status. STUDY SETTING: Retrospective study. PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 475 patients were analyzed. OUTCOME MEASURES: A reduction in muscle strength by more than or equal to one manual muscle testing (MMT) grade postoperatively compared with the preoperative MMT grade was identified as PMDs. Postoperative motor deficits were detected by comparing the preoperative and postoperative physical examination findings in short- and long-term follow-up visits. METHODS: All patients were divided into two subgroups according to preoperative motor status. The following data were collected: (1) demographic data; (2) IONM (intraoperative neuromonitoring) data; and (3) postoperative motor outcomes. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the efficacy of IONM change to predict PMDs. A receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was used to establish optimal IONM warning criteria. RESULTS: Ninety-eight patients had severe preoperative motor deficits (Group S), and 377 patients did not (Group N). MEP and SSEP change was effective for predicting PMDs in the short term (p<.01) and long term (p<.01) for TSDS patients. In Group N, the cutoff values for predicting PMDs in the short term were a decrease of 65% in SSEP amplitude and 89.5% in MEP amplitude of the baseline value. Furthermore, the cutoff values for predicting PMDs in the short term were durations of change of 24.5 minutes for SSEP and 32.5 minutes for MEP. In Group S, however, the cutoff values for predicting PMDs in the short term were a decrease of 36.5% in SSEP amplitude and 59.5% in MEP amplitude of the baseline value. Moreover, the critical values for predicting short-term PMDs were durations of change of 16.5 minutes for SSEP and 17.5 minutes for MEP. CONCLUSIONS: The optimal IONM changes for prediction vary depending on preoperative motor status. Combined SSEP and MEP are excellent for predicting PMDs in TSDS.

The pursuit of synthetic receptors with high binding affinities has long been a central focus in supramolecular chemistry, driven by their significant practical relevance in various fields. Despite the numerous synthetic receptors that have been developed, most exhibit binding affinities in the micromolar range or lower. Only a few exceptional receptors achieve binding affinities exceeding 109  M-1 , and their substrate scopes remain rather limited. In this context, we introduce SC[5]A, a conjugated corral-shaped macrocycle functionalized with ten sulfate groups. Owing to its deep one-dimensional confined hydrophobic cavity and multiple sulfate groups, SC[5]A displays an extraordinarily high binding strength of up to 1011  M-1 towards several size-matched, rod-shaped organic dications in water. Besides, its conformation exhibits good adaptability, allowing it to encapsulate a wide range of other guests with diverse molecular sizes, shapes, and functionalities, exhibiting relatively strong affinities (Ka =106 -108  M-1 ). Additionally, we've explored the preliminary application of SC[5]A in alleviating blood coagulation induced by hexadimethrine bromide in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, the combination of ultrahigh binding affinities (towards complementary guests) and adaptive recognition capability (towards a wide range of functional guests) of SC[5]A positions it as exceptionally valuable for numerous practical applications.

The triboelectrification effect caused by dynamic contact between particles is an issue for explosions caused by electrostatic discharging (ESD) in the triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) for powering the flexible and wearable sensors. The electrostatic strength of dielectric particles (surface charge density, surface potential, electric field, etc.) is essential to evaluate the level of ESD risk. Those differential electrostatic characteristics concerned with unhomogenized swarmed particles cannot be offered via in-current employed-joint COMSOL 6.1 simulation, in which the discrete charged dielectric particles are mistakenly regarded as continuous ones. In this paper, the hybrid discrete element method (EDEM tool) associated with programming in COMSOL Multiphysics 6.1 with MATLAB R2023a was employed to obtain the electrostatic information of the triboelectric dielectric particle swarm. We revealed that the high-accuracy strengths of electric potential and electric field inside particle warm are crucial to evaluating ESD risk. The calculated electrostatic characteristics differ from the grid method and continuous method in the surface potential and electric field. This EDEM-based simulation method is significant for microcosmic understanding and the assessment of the ESD risk in TENGs.

Through the transfer chain of surroundings from feed to the farmed-animals and ultimately the corresponding livestock and poultry products, people are exposed to large amounts of bisphenol analogues (BPs), such as rational emissions from manufacturing plants, feed packaging bags and food packaging contact. Some BPs have been reported to show certain toxicological effects, especially, estrogen and endocrine disrupting effect. With the increasing application of BPs, the problem is becoming more and more serious. We systematically studied the hormonal effects of 18 BPs and their effects on cell homeostasis and classical signaling pathways by using classical E-SCREEN assay, fluorescent probes and western blotting. The results confirmed the estrogen-like effect of 13 BPs and 6 BPs obtained high docking scores (Scores < -9.0) for the three receptors simultaneously with the main interactions of hydrophobic, hydrogen and π-stacking of T-type bonds. BPAP regulates cells via apoptosis and steroid signaling pathway by intracellular ROS and mitochondrial followed the caspase pathway. BPE and BPS were involved in the classical NF-κB and Hippo signaling pathways. All data provides scientific basis for the safety risk assessment of endocrine disrupting and cellular homeostasis evaluation of BPs as chronic environmental pollution.

Purpose: Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is commonly used for evaluation of bone mineral density before spinal surgery, but frequently leads to overestimation in degenerative spinal diseases due to osteoproliferation factors. We introduce a novel method to compare the predictive ability of Hounsfield Units (HU) and DXA methods to predict screw loosening after lumbar interbody fusion surgery in degenerative spinal diseases by measuring HU of pedicle screw trajectory on computed tomography (CT) images preoperatively. Patients and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent posterior lumbar fusion surgery for degenerative diseases. CT HUs measurement was performed using medical imaging software, including the cancellous region on cross-sections of the vertebral body and three-dimensional pedicle screw trajectory. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses were performed for the risk of pedicle screw loosening in association with the Hounsfield scale and preoperative BMD, and the area under the curve (AUC) and the cutoff values were calculated. Results: A total of 90 patients were enrolled and were divided into loosening (n = 33, 36.7%) and non-loosening groups (n = 57, 63.3%). No significant differences in age, gender, length of fixation and preoperative BMD were found between both groups. The loosening group showed lower CT HU values in the vertebral body and screw trajectory than the non-loosening group. Screw trajectory HU (ST-HU) exhibited a higher AUC value than vertebral body HU (B-HU). The cutoff values of B-HU and ST-HU were 160 and 110 HUs, respectively. Conclusion: Three-dimensional pedicle screw trajectory HU values yields a stronger predictive value than vertebral body HU values and BMD and may provide more guidance for surgery. The risk of screw loosening is significantly increased at ST-HU <110 or B-HU <160 at L5 segment.

This study aimed to demonstrate the effects of glucose oxidase (GOD) on broilers as a potential antibiotic substitute. A total of four hundred twenty 1-day-old male Cobb500 broilers were randomly assigned into five dietary treatments, each with six replicates (12 chicks per replicate). The treatments included two control groups (a basal diet and a basal diet with 50 mg/kg aureomycin) and three GOD-additive groups involving three different concentrations of GOD. Analysis after the t-test showed that, on day 21, the feed:gain ratio significantly decreased in the 1,200 U/kg GOD-supplied group (GOD1200) compared to the antibiotic group (Ant). The same effect was also observed in GOD1200 during days 22-42 and in the 600 U/kg GOD-supplied group (GOD600) when compared to the control group (Ctr). The serum tests indicated that, on day 21, the TGF-ß cytokine was significantly decreased in both GOD600 and GOD1200 when compared with Ctr. A decrease in malondialdehyde and an increase in superoxide dismutase in GOD1200 were observed, which is similar to the effects seen in Ant. On day 42, the D-lactate and glutathione peroxidase activity changed remarkably in GOD1200 and surpassed Ant. Furthermore, GOD upregulated the expression of the jejunal barrier genes (MUC-2 and ZO-1) in two phases relative to Ctr. In the aureomycin-supplied group, the secretory immunoglobulin A significantly decreased in the jejunum at 42 days. Changes in microbial genera were also discovered in the cecum by sequencing 16S rRNA genes at 42 days. The biomarkers for GOD supplementation were identified as Colidextribacter, Oscillibacter, Flavonifractor, Oscillospira, and Shuttleworthia. Except for Shuttleworthia, all the abovementioned genera were n-butyrate producers known for imparting their various benefits to broilers. The PICRUSt prediction of microbial communities revealed 11 pathways that were enriched in both the control and GOD-supplied groups. GOD1200 accounted for an increased number of metabolic pathways, demonstrating their potential in aiding nutrient absorption and digestion. In conclusion, a diet containing GOD can be beneficial to broiler health, particularly at a GOD concentration of 1,200 U/kg. The improved feed conversion ratio, immunity, antioxidative capacity, and intestinal condition demonstrated that GOD could be a valuable alternative to antibiotics in broiler breeding.

Vegetable oils are usually cocontaminated with different mycotoxins, including aflatoxins and zearalenone, which cause significant food safety issues. Establishment of multitarget, high-efficiency, and low-cost adsorption methods are considered to be ideal solutions for mycotoxin removal in vegetable oils. In this study, we used metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were used for the simultaneous removal of aflatoxins and zearalenone from vegetable oils. The results showed that MOF-235 simultaneously removed, within 30 min, more than 96.1% of aflatoxins and 83.3% of zearalenone from oils, and oils treated with MOF-235 exhibited di minimis cytotoxicity. Thus, synthesized MOF-235 exhibited sufficient efficacy to remove the targeted residues, as well as safety and reusability, which could be applied as a novel potential adsorbent in the removal of multiple mycotoxins from contaminated vegetable oils.

Bisphenol compounds (BPs) have recently been the subject of growing interest due to their wide use in industrial and consumer products. Besides their adverse effects on human endocrine system, effective extraction of BPs and their elimination from complex sample matrix are still significant challenges in food analysis. Herein, a novel Zr(IV)-based metal-organic framework (MOF), named BUT-16, has been synthesized and utilized for the extraction and enrichment of BPs in milk samples. Bisphenol A (BPA), one of the highest production volume BPs, is used as a model molecule. The uptake capacity for BPA can reach up to 48 mg/g, and the adsorption rate is rapid (∼10 min), because of the larger surface area and cooperation of multiple functionalities of BUT-16. Employing BUT-16 in solid-phase extraction, coupled with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry detection, we generated a rapid, facile, and robust method for the enrichment and detection of trace BPA and its 12 substitutes in milk samples. After optimization, the limits of detection and quantification for BPs can be achieved as low as 0.05 and 0.2 ng/mL, respectively. Without the correction of the isotopic internal standard, the average recoveries of BPs at the different spiked concentrations varied from 63.8 to 120.6%, with a satisfactory precision (RSD ≤ 8.2%). Furthermore, the proposed method was successfully applied to the detection of BPs in real milk samples, and the results were in accordance with those of methods reported previously.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a kind of low-molecular-weight non-protein neurotoxin. It is one of the most potent neurotoxins found in nature, and it is found in puffer fish and various marine biota. The low sensitivity of previous analytical methods limited their application in puffer fish organ samples. This study established a method for the accurate and fast determination of TTX by reversed ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with proton-enhanced electron spray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry. The method yields good peak shapes, high sensitivity and low coeluted interferences. The method was successfully applied to determine TTX in puffer fish tissue samples of about 0.2 g.

Hydroxylated polychlorinated biphenyls (OH-PCBs) are a group of metabolites biotransformed from polychlorinated biphenyls by animals with higher toxicities than their parent compounds. The present work developed and validated an analytical method for determinating penta-, hexa-, and hepta-chlorine substituted OH-PCBs in animal-derived food based on ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) with isotope-dilution. The target analytes were extracted with a 50% n-hexane/dichloromethane (v/v), purified by sulfuric acid-silica gel, and separated by 5% hydrated silica gel, achieving a final concentration of 100 times before injection to LC-MS/MS. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) for target OH-PCBs were within the ranges of 0.003-0.010 µg/kg and 0.009-0.030 µg/kg, respectively. Average recoveries ranged between 76.7% and 116.5%, with relative standard deviations of less than 18.4%. The proposed method is simple, time-saving, sensitive, and accurate, making it a powerful tool for risk monitoring of OH-PCBs in animal-derived food.

The detrimental footprint of mycotoxins in agriculture and on animal production has been widely recognized, especially in swine. Despite an increased number of research evaluating the toxicokinetics of mycotoxins in animal organisms, the absorption, distribution, metabolization, and excretion (ADME) patterns of zearalenone (ZEN) need further understanding. Furthermore, in vivo bioindicator for ZEN exposure in individual pigs has yet to be characterized. This study explored the ADME of ZEN in Bama Aroma pigs, a Chinese miniature pig breed, that has been used herein as a swine model. The findings revealed that ZEN was mainly metabolized into α-zearalenol (α-ZOL), and both ZEN and α-ZOL were mostly found in conjugated forms in the plasma, urine, and bile. The concentration and composition patterns of ZEN and its metabolites were tissue-specific, implying that the small intestine, liver, kidney, and lung play different roles in ZEN metabolism. The plasma concentrations of ZEN + α-ZOL highly correlated (R2 = 0.993) with the ZEN dietary exposure and may be utilized as a bioindicator to investigate animal exposure and mitigation efficacy of mycotoxin detoxifiers. This research would provide both fundamental information and a useful animal model for ZEN toxicity and detoxification studies.

Despite the advances in host-guest chemistry, macrocyclic hosts with deep cavities are far from abundant among the large number of wholly synthetic hosts described in the literature. Herein, we describe the design and synthesis of two new tubular hosts, namely, corral[4]arene and corral[5]arene. The former has been isolated and characterized as two conformational diastereoisomers, one is centrosymmetric and the other asymmetric. The latter, a fivefold symmetrical and flexible host, has also been investigated in detail. It is composed of five 4,4'-dimethoxybiphenyl units bridged by ethynylene linkers at their 2,2'-positions and adopts a pentagonal conformation with a tubular-shaped cavity in the presence of guests. This structure endows corral[5]arene not only with a conjugated backbone, capable of bright fluorescent emission (quantum yield, 56%), but also a deep π-electron-rich aromatic cavity with remarkable conformational flexibility. The adaptive cavity of corral[5]arene allows it to accommodate a wide range of neutral and positively charged electron-deficient guests with different molecular sizes and shapes. Binding constants between this host and these guests in three different nonpolar organic solvents lie in the range of 103 to 107 M-1. Moreover, corral[5]arene exhibits dynamic chirality on account of the axes of chirality associated with each of the five biphenyl units and displays first-order transformation as exhibited by circular dichroism in response to the addition of chiral guests. All these stereochemical features render corral[5]arene an attractive host for a variety of supramolecular and nanotechnological applications.

Improving the utilization rate of pesticides is key to achieve a reduction and synergism, and adding appropriate surfactant to pesticide preparation is an effective way to improve pesticide utilization. Fluorinated surfactants have excellent surface activity, thermal and chemical stability, but long-chain linear perfluoroalkyl derivatives are highly toxic, obvious persistence and high bioaccumulation in the environment. Therefore, new strategies for designing fluorinated surfactants which combine excellent surface activity and environmental safety would be useful. In this study, four non-ionic gemini surfactants with short fluorocarbon chains were synthesized. The surface activities of the resulting surfactants were assessed on the basis of equilibrium surface tension, dynamic surface tension, and contact angle. Compared with their monomeric counterparts, the gemini surfactants had markedly lower critical micelle concentrations and higher diffusivities, as well as better wetting abilities. We selected a single-chain surfactant and a gemini surfactant with good surface activities as synergists for the glyphosate water agent. Both surfactants clearly improved the efficacy of the herbicide, but the gemini surfactant had a significantly greater effect than the single-chain surfactant. An acute toxicity test indicated that the gemini surfactant showed slight toxicity to rats.

Fluorene-9-bisphenol (BHPF), which has been used as a substitute for bisphenol A (BPA) in consumer goods and industrial products, can be detected in environmental media and human urine. BHPF has been reported to have endocrine-disrupting effects, whereas deleterious effects on steroidogenesis in H295R cells and underlying mechanisms are still unclear. Here, we investigated effects of BHPF on steroidogenesis using human adrenocortical carcinoma cells (H295R). Cytotoxicity was initially assessed and half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) was determined based on proliferation of cells. Responses of four steroid hormones, aldosterone, cortisol, testosterone and 17ß-estradiol (E2), and ten critical genes, StAR, HMGR, CYP11A1, CYP11B1, CYP11B1, HSD3B2, CYP21, CYP17, 17ß-HSD, and CYP19, involved in steroidogenesis after exposure to non-cytotoxic concentrations of BHPF were determined in the presence or absence of 100 µM dbcAMP. Adenylate cyclase (AC) activity, intracellular concentrations of cAMP, PKA activity and amounts of steroidogenic factor-1 (SF-1) gene and expressions of proteins were determined to elucidate underlying mechanisms of effects on steroidogenesis. BHPF was cytotoxic to H295R cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Effects on production of hormones results demonstrated that exposure to greater concentrations of BHPF inhibited productions of aldosterone, cortisol, testosterone and E2 by down-regulation of steroidogenic genes. Inhibition of AC activity, intercellular cAMP content and PKA activity after exposure to BHPF implied that the AC/cAMP/PKA signaling pathway was involved in BHPF-induced suppression of steroidogenesis in H295R cells. Additionally, BHPF inhibited steroidogenesis and expressions of steroidogenic genes via decreasing expression of SF-1 protein, both in basal and dbcAMP-induced treatment. These results contributed to understanding molecular mechanisms of BHPF-induced effects on steroidogenesis and advancing the comprehensive risk assessment of BPs.

Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are dioxin-like persistent organic pollutants that are primarily produced unintentionally during industrial thermal processes. These compounds are harmful to the environment and human health. This study investigated the occurrences of all 75 PCN congeners in agricultural areas near secondary copper smelters in China. The PCN concentrations in aquatic foods, eggs, crops, sediments and soils within 10 km of these smelters were higher than those in samples collected 20-30 km away from such facilities. In contrast, the PCN concentrations in compound animal feed samples collected at different distances from the secondary copper smelters were comparable to one another. Similar PCN homologue patterns were found in crop, egg, feed and soil samples collected at different distances from the smelters but the homologue profiles of PCNs in aquatic food and sediment samples collected from different distances varied. Lower chlorinated naphthalenes were the predominant homologues in most samples. The contamination of farm animals and crops with PCNs might result from the emission of these compounds from such sources into the surrounding environment. However, the health risks associated with human exposure to PCNs through food consumption are low for both distances (<10 km and 20-30 km) from secondary copper smelters.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues have been classified as endocrine disruptors via binding to nuclear receptors. Two novel bioassays, BLYrARS and BLYrPRS, were developed for rapid detection of agonistic and antagonistic activities of BPA and five of its analogues binding rat androgen receptor (rAR) and rat progesterone receptor (rPR). The reporter bioassay was based on two autonomously bioluminescent strains of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, recombined with a bacterial luciferase reporter gene cassette (lux) that can produce autofluorescence, regulated by the corresponding hormone response element acting as the responsive promoter. The bioluminescent signal is autonomous and continuous without cell lysis or addition of exogenous reagents. The AR agonist R1881 could be detected at 4 h with a half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) of ~9.4 nM. The PR agonist progesterone could be determined at 4 h with an EC50 of ~2.74 nM. None of the sixteen bisphenols presented agonistic activities against rAR and rPR. However, thirteen BPs were rAR antagonists and eleven BPs acted as rPR antagonists with different potency. The BLYrARS and BLYrPRS bioassay characterized by automated signal acquisition without additional manipulations or cost can be applied for simple and rapid detection of agonistic and antagonistic activities of BPs and other compounds acting as agonists or antagonists of rAR and rPR. Based on data derived by use of this bioassay endocrine-disrupting activities of some BPA analogues are more potent than BPA.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can be metabolized into hydroxylated PCBs (OH-PCBs) that exhibit greater toxicity than their parent compounds. In particular, 2,2',4,5,5'-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 101) is commonly found in chicken feeds and breeding environments, although information on the biotransformation of this PCB in chickens is lacking. In this study, the hydroxylation metabolization of PCB 101 was assessed based on in vitro trials with Sanhuang chicken liver microsomes and in vivo experiments with Hy-Line Brown hens. The para-substituted metabolite 4'-OH-PCB 101 is the predominant metabolite of PCB 101. 4'-OH-PCB 101 is preferentially retained in the chicken bloodstream and partly distributed into different tissues of laying hens. The blood-brain barrier can effectively prevent the OH-PCB from entering the brain, and the adipose tissue contains a relatively low residue concentration of the OH-PCB. The laying hen can deplete the OH-PCB via laying eggs and excrement. The ratio of 4'-OH-PCB 101/PCB 101 in egg yolk is about 1:2. These results first provide definite evidence for the previous hypothesis of the PCB 101 metabolism by chickens. They could assist in predicting the environmental fate of PCBs, and in the risk assessment of PCBs and OH-PCBs in chicken-based foodstuffs.

Knowledge of the transfer features of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), a class of emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs), is still lacking concerning the environment-feed-food transfer chain of farm animals. We conducted a controlled feeding experiment with laying hens fed fly ash-contaminated diets to investigate the toxicokinetics and bioaccumulation of PCNs (tri- to octa-CNs) in the hen eggs and tissues. The eggs showed increasing PCNs levels after 14 days of oral exposure, which gradually decreased during the 28-day depuration period but still exceeded the initial levels. The apparent one-compartment half-life of ∑63PCNs in the eggs was 28.9 days, which was comparable to those of other dioxin-like compounds. The uptake and depuration rates of PCN congeners in the eggs were 0.002-0.010 and 0.016-0.079 days-1 in eggs, respectively. The depuration rates were decreased with the n-octanol/water partition coefficients (logKOW), indicating that the eggs retained more lipophilic congeners, whereas the uptake rates increased with the logKOW, indicating the faster deposition of the more lipophilic PCNs in eggs during the exposure period. The transfer rates of PCN congeners ranged from 0.27%-23.0%, indicating the transfer potential of PCNs from feed to eggs. Additionally, the PCN distribution in the laying hens at the end of the exposure showed tissue-specific accumulation, with the high levels of PCNs in the liver, spleen, and ovum. Positive correlations between the transfer factors (Ctissue/Cfeed) and the logKOW suggested that more lipophilic PCN congeners tended to accumulate in the tissues. After quantitatively assessing the feed-to-food transfer of PCNs in laying hens, our results highlight the risk of exposure to PCNs in the food supply chain.

The potential contamination of food items with polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) has attracted increasing attention because of their toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulative characteristics. Humans are exposed to PCNs primarily through consuming animal-derived foodstuffs. However, the pathways by which PCNs can enter the food supplying chain are poorly understood. In this study, Σ75PCNs were determined in raw cow milk (n = 82) collected from three different regions that varied in the intensity of PCNs emission sources in North China, using high-resolution gas chromatography/high-resolution mass spectrometry method. Higher PCN concentrations (214-2050 pg/g lw) were found in raw cow milk from dairy cow farms located in the region with relatively higher intensity of emission sources. Less chlorinated congeners were dominant in all raw cow milk samples. PCNs in cow milk might result from industrial fly ash emissions that contaminate animal feed through atmospheric deposition. Risks posed to humans through consuming PCNs in cow milk were low.
